Following Justin Trudeau’s resignation as Canadian Prime Minister on Monday after nearly a decade in office, the Liberal Party faces the crucial task of selecting a new leader to navigate the growing turmoil and internal dissatisfaction. Here are the key contenders to lead the party and potentially take over as prime minister:
Chrystia Freeland
The former Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Chrystia Freeland, was a close ally of Trudeau but parted ways over his economic policies. The 56-year-old Toronto MP resigned in December, accelerating Trudeau’s decision to step down.
Freeland’s resignation letter, penned amidst tariff threats from Donald Trump, emphasized Canada’s need for fiscal discipline. “Our country is facing a grave challenge. That means keeping our fiscal powder dry today, so we have the reserves we may need for a coming tariff war,” she wrote.
Previously, as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Freeland played a critical role in renegotiating the free trade deal with the United States and Mexico.
Mark Carney
A highly respected figure, Mark Carney, 59, has led both the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England. Though he has never held public office, Carney is highly regarded by Trudeau, who sought to include him in his cabinet.
Reports suggest Carney has been engaging with Liberal Party members in recent weeks as Trudeau’s leadership weakened. A Harvard graduate, Carney’s experience in global finance makes him a notable contender despite his lack of political experience.
Mélanie Joly
Mélanie Joly, 45, represents the Montreal area and has served as Minister of Foreign Affairs since October 2021. An Oxford graduate, she took office during a critical time as Russia amassed troops on Ukraine’s border.
Joly visited Ukraine to reaffirm Canada’s support shortly before Vladimir Putin’s invasion. Her leadership during this period has bolstered her credentials.
François-Philippe Champagne
The 54-year-old Minister of Innovation, Science, and Industry has a strong background in business and hails from Quebec, a politically significant province. A member of parliament since 2015, Champagne is known for his energy and leadership in previous roles, including as Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Anita Anand
Anita Anand, 57, is a lawyer, academic, and MP for Oakville, near Toronto. Educated at Oxford, she served as Minister of Procurement during the COVID-19 pandemic and currently holds the role of Minister of Transport and Internal Trade. Anand entered politics in 2019 and has been recognized for her effective handling of critical portfolios.
The Liberal Party’s decision will shape the nation’s leadership as it navigates internal challenges and prepares for general elections later this year.
