As part of efforts to regulate migration, the Canadian government has amended the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations, allowing border officials to cancel electronic travel authorizations (eTAs) and temporary resident visas (TRVs).
This regulatory shift is expected to affect international students, employees, and temporary residents across the country.
New Immigration Rule Implemented on January 31
Canada continues to be a top destination for Indian students pursuing higher education. According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), approximately 427,000 Indian students are currently enrolled in Canadian institutions.
The recent regulatory changes form part of broader immigration reforms, including the discontinuation of the Student Direct Stream (SDS) visa program by late 2024.
Expanded Powers for Canadian Border Officials
Under the revised regulations, Canadian immigration and border officers now possess increased authority to revoke electronic travel authorizations (eTAs), temporary resident visas (TRVs), work permits, and study permits under specific conditions.
Canada hosts a significant Indian diaspora, with over 1.35 million people of Indian origin residing in the country, according to the 2021 Census.
Indian Immigration to Canada on the Rise
In recent years, Canada has emerged as a preferred destination for Indian immigrants. The number of Indian nationals immigrating to Canada surged from 32,828 in 2013 to 139,715 in 2023, reflecting a 326% increase.
